Recent advances in technology can possibly change this, as the industry has seen opportunities to create solar panels with new designs, in terms of both aesthetics and functionality.

Aesthetically-pleasing designs

Solar power has only recently been given a great deal of attention. As a result, residential homes built 10, 20, or 30 years ago were not constructed in such a way that solar panels could be later added if the resident family decides to install some.

Previously, solar panels were very thick and had to be mounted with out-of-place brackets on top of existing roofs. Fortunately, the solar panel manufacturer industry has recently realized that poor aesthetics is one of the main reasons why solar power has not completely made its way into the residential market.

New panels are hardly noticeable. The tiles are seamlessly integrated into the existing roofs of residential homes, which achieve a very elegant look. The rise in number of solar installations in the U.S. rose by an amazing 45% in 2007 is widely attributed to the creation of more aesthetically-pleasing panel designs.

There are a number of companies that have already come up with more aesthetically-pleasing solar panel designs. The Sun Power Corporation, for example, the leading U.S. solar panel manufacturer, has created some panels that are compatible with Mediterranean-styled clay tiles and flat roof tiles. Lumeta, another manufacturer, has design panels that are awaiting industry certification.

The panels made by both Sun Power and Lumeta are made from silicon. The market will soon see thinner panels made of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS). As of now, however, such panels are less efficient than the currently existing silicon ones. Sometime in the near future, these thin-film panels are expected to dominate residential use by becoming a standard part of the building process.

Highly functional designs

One example of a new, more functional solar panel design is that recently designed by the Georgia Tech Research Institute. This innovative design allows the panels to absorb more sunlight, enabling them to produce up to 60 times more current. This new design makes use of nano-towers that add significant surface area to the solar panels, giving the particles of light from the sun more chances to strike the part of the cell that produces electricity.

However, these new panels still have a couple of kinks yet to be worked out. These new panel designs have too much resistance in their cells, resulting in an inability to generate the kind of electricity needed.

Jud Ready, senior research engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute and creator of this new solar panel design, is determined to work on the design and modify its features to resolve the difficulties within it. The US Air Force is currently partially sponsoring the research in high hopes that these smaller and more efficient solar panels will replace old, bulky ones and can eventually be used to power satellites and spacecrafts in the future.

Some functions for consumer electronics will create a drain on power and consumers are combating this problem by purchasing chargers that will fit into the cigarette lighter of the automobile. Others have cut back on using such applications because the functions are costing consumers more money each day, and purchasing a second or third consumer electronics product of the same type for other family member’s use is beginning to be reconsidered due to the cost in powering the product.

Some consumers have switched to rechargeable battery types but the laboring process of removing these power sources when fully charged is beginning to remove the joy out of owning some consumer electronics. The required functions by the user for some consumer electronics to continue to work have rendered some consumer electronics useless after one week of use.

Some cellular telephones are unusable after consumers bend teeth inside the charging port week after week. Since charging the battery is a necessary function, a consumer would think that the telephone should be repaired or replaced free of charge at the place of purchase. This is not the case though because cellular service providers have established a strict policy about repairs and those that sell these consumer products will not replace the product if the purchase period was over 30 days ago. Other products will be offered though for a nominal charge and a new battery will be installed at the counter after the customer buys it.

Some people rarely use half the functions for consumer electronics that are buried within the operating system on consumer electronics. People were confused when video recording machines were introduced because some consumers could not set the clock. The video recorders installed on consumer electronics such as telephones have taken that confusion to a higher level. Some consumers activate the camera function without meaning to and are surprised to find that the memory on the telephone is full. Some of the memory will be filled with videos that serve no purpose and were unintentionally filmed.

Some of the functions for consumer electronics are helpful to consumers. Many cellular telephones are equipped with software applications that provide consumers with handy tip calculators. Other useful functions that are included in the tools menu would prove helpful if the consumer needed to know what the time was in a foreign country. Configuring the world clock functions might prove challenging though and thus time consuming. Contact lists provide consumers with many function possibilities but transferring this function to another mobile phone product will cost the consumer money because service providers charge for this transfer function.

The snooze alarms on digital radios provide consumers with a few minutes more sleep. The snooze functions installed on consumer electronics such as computer systems manage the sleep patterns for the operating system and thus extend the shelf life of the product. Cellular telephone customers can enjoy the alarm functions on the calendar function and never again forget a task or be late for an appointment. One thing that most people who own a cell phone or a laptop are very concerned and careful of is spilling water or another liquid onto it.

For example, a computer that has been submerged in flood waters for a period of time isn’t that likely to be recovered, but with the right care and proper conditions, it can be done. It all depends on the circumstances of your situation, but whatever you do, don’t try to power on the device or use it in any way before it’s dry, no matter what size or kind of device it may be.

1.
